It’s official: Lions sign DE Mike Daniels; surprisingly release Theo Riddick

ALLEN PARK — The Lions made it official on Saturday morning that they’ve signed veteran defensive end Mike Daniels.

Running back Theo Riddick was released to make room for Daniels.

Coach Matt Patricia made the announcements Saturday morning just before the start of camp.

“I have a lot of respect for (Daniels), he’s had really good production in the way he plays the game, he’s very intense,’’ Patricia said noting his knowledge of the game.

Patricia said he met with Daniels on Thursday.

“He’s very aware of the division which is nice,’’ Patricia said.

Daniels joins Damon “Snacks” Harrison, A’Shawn Robinson, Trey Flowers, Da’Shawn Hand and Romeo Okwara on the defensive line.

The Green Bay Packers released the 30-year-old Daniels just before the start of camp.

The seven-year veteran signed a one-year deal worth $9.1 according to several reports. He was set to make $8.1 million in Green Bay this season.

Daniels, a Pro Bowler in 2017, had 29 sacks in his seven years with the Packers. He was a fourth-round draft pick in 2012.

Patricia would not get into details of why they cut Riddick who was scheduled to make $3.2 million this season.

“Theo is obviously a great professional, did a lot of great things for us,’’ Patricia said.

Riddick spent the last six seasons with the Lions. Last season in 14 games he had 40 carries for 171 yards and 61 catches for 384 yards.

The Lions added veteran running back C.J. Anderson in the offseason and have depth at the position with Kerryon Johnson, Zack Zenner and rookie Ty Johnson.

Lions: Ziggy Ansah, Theo Riddick return today at Vikings; Abdullah inactive

Slay active despite limited practice Friday

He’s back. Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah is active today in Minnesota in a key NFC North game against the Vikings.

Ansah was injured his shoulder in the season opening loss to the Jets and has not played a snap since then, missing six games. He has practiced on a limited basis for several weeks and, once again, was listed on Friday’s injury report at questionable for today.

Running back Theo Riddick, who has missed the last two games with an injured knee, also returns. Look for Riddick, who can line up in the slot, to help fill the gap left after Golden Tate was traded to the Eagles.

Cornerback Darius Slay, who showed up on Friday’s injury report, is active which is huge. The defense will have its hands full with the Vikings offense and it’d be a tougher road without Slay.

Right guard T.J. Lang (hip) who was limited in practice all week will also be active.

Ameer Abdullah, who fumbled on a return last week, is healthy but inactive

Linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin (neck/toe) will be inactive.

Other Lions’ inactives: Offensive lineman Joe Dahl, DE Eric Lee, OL Andrew Donnal, LB Kelvin Sheppard and DE Kerry Hyder.

Inactives for the Vikings include wide receiver Stefon Diggs, RB Roc Thomas, safety Anndrew Sendejo, LB Anthony Barr, guard Tom Compton and DE Tayshaun Bower.

The Lions (3-4) could use a win against the Vikings (4-3-1) to stay in the hunt in the NFC North.

Lions new NT Damon Harrison active; Ziggy Ansah, Theo Riddick remain out

Kickoff at 1 p.m. at Ford Field

DETROIT >> Damon “Snacks” Harrison, who was acquired in a trade with the Giants on Wednesday, is active today against the Seattle Seahawks at Ford Field.

The run-stuffing nose tackle practiced with his new team on Thursday and Friday. He said he was working night and day to learn the playbook. Coach Matt Patricia would not say on Friday if Harrison would be familiar enough with the defense to play. Apparently the veteran is a quick learner.

Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah remains out. Ansah played in 19 snaps in the opening loss to the Jets before he injured his shoulder. He has not played a snap since then. He was limited in practice all week and listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report.

Linebacker Jarrad Davis (calf) is active after he had been listed as questionable. He had limited practice on Thursday and Friday after sitting out on Wednesday.

Wide receiver T.J. Jones is inactive with Brandon Powell possibly seeing his first action.

Running back Theo Riddick (knee) was ruled out on Friday. It will be the second straight game he missed.

Other Lions inactives: Cornerback Lenzy Pipkins, defensive end Kerry Hyder, guard Joe Dahl and offensive lineman Andrew Donnal.

The Lions and Seahawks both enter the game at 3-3. Kickoff is 1 p.m., on FOX.
